Thanks to everyone who came out to my event at Indy Reads Books this past weekend, despite the crummy weather. The staff was helpful and friendly, and I appreciate the support of everyone who came out to hear me read an excerpt from Zack Jackson & The Hives of Valtra or to get books signed.
My next local event will be Gen Con (Jul. 30th – Aug. 2nd), but before then I’ll be at ConQuesT in Kansas City (May 22 – May 24). I was hoping to debut book one of Scars of the Sundering, Malediction, there, but due to illness-related delays, I don’t think that will happen. Meanwhile, I’m over 30,000 words into the first draft of book three, Salvation (Lament sits, patiently awaiting the completion of Malediction).
I’ll have some art from Scars of the Sundering to show off in the coming weeks, and I’ll be posting snippets from the first chapter, as well.

Back in January, I pulled the entire Zack Jackson series from all sales channels except Amazon.com and made them all exclusive to that platform. In that time, my sales have actually increased. I can’t really claim it’s because of that, since sales increased across all titles, and my fantasy series is not exclusive to Amazon. One thing that I can attribute to the change in my strategy, is that I am actually get borrows through Kindle Unlimited now. Even though every book I’ve ever released has been exclusive to Amazon for the first 90 days of its release cycle, this is the first time I’ve started seeing borrows.
I don’t know why that is. I did monkey with my keywords a bit, and I suspect that is the reason. I can’t prove it, however.
In other news, I will be appearing at Indy Reads Books on April 19th! I’ll have copies of all five of my novels for sale and will be reading from my upcoming novel Malediction, the first novel in the Scars of the Sundering trilogy. I’ve never done a reading before and I’m a little nervous about picking a piece of this novel to read. Hopefully, I’ll actually have an audience.
If you want to buy a signed print version of any of my books to give as a gift, you can buy direct from me by sending an e-mail. Just click the e-mail link under Contact Me to the left. Include the titles, quantities, and whether or not you would like them signed and/or personalized. I’ll need your complete mailing address, including phone number for shipping. No P.O. Boxes, please. When I get your e-mail, I’ll send you a PayPal invoice for the total including shipping.
There’s still time to get books in time for Christmas if you’re in the United States (probably Canada, too). If you’re overseas, I will make the attempt, but cannot guarantee results.
Thanks to the support of readers like you, I was chosen as an Honoree in Nuvo’s Reader’s Choice 2014 Best of Indy — Best Local Author! I was beaten by John Green and Dan Wakefield, both of whom have their own Wikipedia pages, so I don’t think I did too badly at all. Thank you all so much for your support.
Don’t forget I have a book signing coming up at the Breadloaf Book Shop in Lake Geneva, WI next Saturday, August 2nd from 1pm – 4pm. If you’re local to the area, or just passing through, I hope to see you there.
I’ll also have a table at Gen Con in the Dealer’s Hall on Author’s Avenue. Gen Con run from August 14th – 17th and I will be there all four days. In addition to having copies of all of my books available to purchase, I’ll have freebies and giveaways!
On December 13th from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, I will be signing books at Half-Price Books in Clearwater Village on the north side of Indianapolis. Books make great Christmas gifts and I will be happy to sign and personalize any of my novels for you or your loved ones. I write fantasy novels appropriate for ages 16+ and science-fiction appropriate for ages 10+.
Work has begun in earnest on the third book in the Zack Jackson series: Zack Jackson & The Hives of Valtra. I anticipate releasing this book in late Q1 or early Q2 2014. In this installment, Zack and his Junior Ranger troop take a trip to the Valtraxian homeworld, Valtra. While there, Zack will have to learn important lessons dealing with the up and downs of friendship and how important those ties are when things are at their worst. That description makes it sound like a “Very Special Episode,” doesn’t it? We’ll have to see how it turns out when I’m finished! 😀
Sadly, this means work on my next World of Calliome novel (Scars of the Sundering) has stopped. Frankly, I was having a difficult time with this novel. I just couldn’t get into the characters the way I needed to; I wasn’t believing in the story. I thought it was best to step away and work on something else. Hopefully I’ll find my muse for it again.
In the meantime, I will be having a book signing at the Half-Price Books Outlet in Bloomington, IN this Saturday (November 16). If you’re in the area, stop by and say “Hi!” I’ll have copies of all of my novels for sale.
So, in all the excitement I forgot to mention that Underdiscussion: The Undergopher Podcast interviewed me at Gen Con. You can listen to the episode here: http://undergopher.com/blog1/2013/08/16/ud128-gencon-hans-cummings-interview-and-day-1/
Actually, I think there are TWO interviews with me in that episode. One deals with me as an author, and the other with my position as ENnie Award Submissions Coordinator.
There will be another podcast coming up, Genretainment on SciFi Pulse Radio. I don’t have an exact date yet, but I will link to it when it goes live. That one will be very interesting to listen to, because I’m fairly certain I not only put my foot in my mouth regarding one of my favorite characters, but I chewed it to a bloody pulp in the process. I was so embarrassed, and I don’t think it’ll get edited out.
In other news, I’m still scheduled for a book signing at the Half-Price Books Outlet in Bloomington, IN in the afternoon of Saturday, November 16th. Come on down and see me!
